Skincare goes on from the thinnest texture to the richest: cleanse, exfoliate (only two or three times a week), toner, eye cream, then moisturizer, with sunscreen as the very last step in the morning. The American Academy of Dermatology lays it out the same way, because the order changes how well each product works.
Two doubts come up a lot. Does toner go before or after moisturizer? Before. And before or after exfoliating? After. Here's the whole thing, step by step.
What's the right order for a skincare routine?
- Cleanse. Lather the soap on damp skin, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Don't rub with the towel.
- Exfoliate, but not every day. A liquid exfoliant two or three nights a week, in small circles for about 30 seconds, then rinse.
- Toner or serum. The thinnest thing that stays on your skin goes first, on clean skin.
- Eye cream. Just a little, tapped along the bone around the eye.
- Moisturizer. The richest texture goes last, because it slows down how fast water leaves your skin.
- Sunscreen, mornings only. Always the final step before makeup.
Why this order? Thin, watery products spread easily on bare skin. Put a cream down first and it gets in their way. The AAD's guide to skincare order uses the same sequence: cleanse, then anything targeted, then moisturizer and sunscreen, then makeup.
What changes between morning and night?
Less than you'd think. Mornings are short: cleanse, toner, a light layer of cream, sunscreen. That routine has to sit under makeup and hold up through a Florida afternoon. At night you've got time for the exfoliating step and a fuller layer of cream. Honestly, that's most of the difference. I wrote a longer piece on what actually changes from day to night.
| Step | Morning | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanse | Yes | Yes |
| Exfoliate | No | 2–3 nights a week |
| Toner / serum | Yes | Yes |
| Eye cream | Optional | Yes |
| Moisturizer | Light layer | Fuller layer |
| Sunscreen | Yes | No |
Does toner go before or after exfoliating?
After. Exfoliate, rinse, then toner on clean skin. On exfoliation nights, keep the rest of the routine calm: no second exfoliating product, and moisturizer right after, since the AAD notes exfoliating can dry skin out. Their advice on exfoliating at home also says darker skin tones should skip aggressive scrubbing. If you're torn between a gentle method and a rough one, that's your answer.
What does this look like with a four-step set?
The Balancing Skincare Routine is exactly that sequence. The round green loofah soap (120 g) every time you wash. The facial exfoliant (120 mL), a green gel with little grains and Dead Sea salt on its ingredient list, two or three nights a week. The toner/serum (100 mL) and the face cream (100 g) morning and night.
The Cleopatra Facial Ritual Set adds a fifth step, the 30 g eye cream, between toner and moisturizer. The Turmeric Tone-Evening Set keeps the same order in three steps: the orange loofah soap, the exfoliant, the cream. With that one, wear sunscreen during the day.
Where does the water acidifier go?
Before everything. In the Chamomile Calming Ritual Set, the acidifier (120 mL, in a frosted glass dropper bottle) goes into the basin water first. Then you wash with the chamomile soap and finish with the chamomile & coconut cream. There's no toner step in that set, so it's a short routine. Why the water matters is explained separately.
Can I skip steps?
Yes. The two that matter most are cleansing and moisturizing. The rest is fine-tuning. The AAD warns that piling on too many products can irritate skin, so if you're new to this, use just soap and cream for two weeks, then add one step at a time. That's exactly what the mini sets are for.
