What Each Ingredient in the Cleopatra Line Does, Collagen Included

Most ingredients in the Cleopatra line do one of three jobs: hold water in the surface of your skin, soften it, or give the product its texture and keep it stable. And the honest part up front: hydrolyzed collagen in a toner or a soap does not turn into your skin's own collagen. It works on the surface, and that's what it's there for.

Everything here comes from the ingredient lists (INCI) printed on my labels. I'm talking about what each ingredient does in a cosmetic, meaning how your skin looks and feels, not about promised results.

Does hydrolyzed collagen in skincare work?

It does a real job, just not the one it's often sold for. Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen cut into much smaller pieces so it dissolves in water. On the skin it acts as a humectant and leaves a very light film, so it helps hold water at the surface and your face can feel smoother.

What it can't do is sink in and become part of your collagen. Your collagen is made by your own cells, deep in the skin, and a cream can't hand it over. Under U.S. rules, a product meant to change the structure or function of the body is a drug, not a cosmetic (FDA). So when a collagen cream for the face promises to rebuild yours, that promise is the red flag.

In this line, the collagen is in the soap, the exfoliant and the toner. The first two get rinsed off. The toner stays on, so that's where it has time to work. The face cream doesn't list collagen at all, in case you were looking for it there.

Is elastin the same as collagen?

No. Both are proteins in the deeper layer of your skin, with different jobs: collagen gives it strength, and elastin lets it stretch and spring back. Hydrolyzed elastin is only in the Cleopatra toner, and it behaves like hydrolyzed collagen, holding moisture at the surface. It doesn't replace your own elastin either.

What does panthenol do in skin care?

Panthenol is provitamin B5. In skincare it's a humectant, so it draws water into the top layer of the skin and leaves it feeling soft. You'll find it in four of the five pieces.

What does caffeine do in an eye cream?

Caffeine is one of the most common ingredients in eye creams, and it's the one the Cleopatra eye cream has and the face cream doesn't. Here's where I stop, though. A lot of what gets promised about caffeine online is about changing what happens under the skin, and a cosmetic can't promise that. What I can tell you is what surrounds it in that 30 g jar: glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, niacinamide, panthenol, sweet almond oil and coconut oil. Those do the hydrating. Use a tiny amount, tapped along the bone, not on the lid.

What about niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid, is in all five pieces. It matters most in the steps that stay on. Niacinamide, vitamin B3, is one of the most studied cosmetic ingredients; in one study, 50 women used a 5% niacinamide product on half the face for 12 weeks (Bissett et al., 2005). U.S. labels don't show percentages, and I won't borrow a study's results for my cream. In the face cream it's listed fifth, ahead of the shea butter. More in niacinamide, kojic acid and alpha arbutin.

What do the oils, shea butter and Dead Sea salt add?

Sweet almond oil and coconut oil soften the skin and leave a thin layer that slows down water loss. The face cream adds shea butter, the only butter in the line. Dead Sea salt shows up only in the exfoliant, listed second after water: the grains do the polishing, and the liquid base lets them glide.

What are the small ingredients at the end for?

Aloe leaf juice adds water and helps keep skin hydrated. Allantoin is a conditioning ingredient that helps skin feel smooth. Tocopherol is vitamin E, and one of its jobs is protecting the oils in the formula from going rancid. Then the helpers: phenoxyethanol is the preservative any water-based product needs, xanthan gum thickens the toner, and coco-glucoside is the mild cleanser in the exfoliant. You won't find Parfum in any of the five lists.

To see all of them in the order you'd use them, read the Cleopatra routine, step by step. The five pieces come together in the Cleopatra Facial Ritual Set.
